The game of Cricket is played between two competing teams of eleven players on each side, on a large ground called a pitch. The teams comprise of players with a mixture of abilities, some specialising at batting, some at bowling, and with one who acts as ‘wicket-keeper’.

In the centre of the pitch (usually 22 yards long), called ‘the wicket’. At each end of the wicket are placed three sticks (stumps) adjacent to each other in an upright position. They are separated by a gap not greater than the diameter of a cricket ball. On top of each set of stumps are placed two smaller sticks (’bails’). A chalk outline is drawn in front of each set of stumps called a ‘crease’. The game is refereed by two ‘umpires’

Starting the game, one side will ‘bat’ first, while the other side will bowl to them. The object for the batting side is to score the optimal number of ‘runs’ (points) before the bowling side have dismissed them. The object for the bowling side is to dismiss the batsmen as economically as possible. Once the process is complete the roles are reversed.

Runs can be scored each time that the batting pair is able to run between the wickets after a ball has been bowled (and before the stumps are or potentially can be touched with the ball) a run is scored. If the ball travels outside of the playing area, and it has touched the ground prior to leaving the playing area.

Additionally, runs can be accrued through failure of the bowler to correctly deliver the ball; either through an incorrect bowling action, when this is deemed a ‘no-ball’, or through the ball being delivered too wide for the batsman to strike it, known as a ‘wide’.

Dismissal of the batsmen can occur in a number of ways. The batsman facing the bowler can be ‘bowled’ out. If the batsman strikes the ball with the bat and it is caught by the bowler or one of the bowler’s side who are dotted around the ground to field the ball before it hits the ground, then he is deemed to be out. A batsman can also be stumped by wicket-keeper, who stands immediately behind the batsman to retrieve balls coming through from the bowler. If the batsman steps in front of the crease leaving no part of his anatomy or the bat behind, and the wicket-keeper is able to remove the bails from the wicket with the ball. A batsman can also be out ‘leg before wicket’ or ‘lbw.

A horse riding holiday is an excellent opportunity to explore the outer world and its beautiful scenery while enjoying the nature. There are many different horse riding holidays available for your choice. You will have to decide if you will be taking your own horse or using the horses that are provided by the riding centres.

You may also have to think about the type of accommodation you may choose for the holiday. Some prefer to rest in a luxurious hotel after a ride, some prefer to camp out, while others may prefer to take their holiday on a working farm.

There are three types; singles holidays, couples holidays & family holidays.

Singles holidays

There are horse riding centres that have holidays specifically designed for people who are single. These holidays are great for independent travellers who want to enjoy good riding and excellent cuisine while being in the mist of friendly people.

These centres specialize is serving singles, some even offer online bulletin boards so you can post and read messages before you go on your holiday. This allows you to meet your fellow guests that will be travelling with you before you even arrive.

Couples holidays

If you are going as a couple may be you are looking for a romantic getaway which happens to include horseback riding, or you and your partner want to relax but also need to further develop your riding skills. Some of these centres focus more on romance like candlelit dinners, private villas next to a beach, etc. Some centres will recognize you as a couple, so you may get certain romantic perks, but the whole idea will be to advance your riding skills.

Family holidays

While you are on family holiday, ask whether your whole family wants to spend the entire vacation riding horses. If you have children that would rather ride the horses a bit, then partake in other centre activities; such as a laser blast area, laser clays, bungee trampolines, or climbing walls.

You may also explore the rugged coastline, ride through the striking countryside, or trot along the beach at sunset, all that will make your family horse riding holiday a great experience.

This year’s Glucofit Cricket Sixes tournament, starting on October 16, gives schoolboys from the once war-torn North and East the opportunity to rub shoulders with Colombo’s elite. This is further evidence on how much this tournament has gained popularity over the years. Six combined school sides will feature players from lesser known schools and districts like Jaffna, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya, Polonnaruwa, Bandarawela, Moneragala, Ampara and Hambantota.

Another new concept is the Free Hit off a no-ball and also an arts competition where students of Wesley College will figure in the Glucofit Cricart. This competition will be extended to all schools around the country from next year.

The organisers will make use of the occasion to declare open on the final day of the tournament the newly re-laid turf pitches at Campbell Park which was supervised by Sri Lanka Cricket. The winners will receive the Munchee Glucofit Champions Trophy and the runner-up the Old Wesleyites SC trophy.

There are individuals awards for Best Batsman, Best Bowler, Best Fielder, Highest Number of Sixes, Man of the Tournament, Man of the Final, and Best Outstation Team. Another new trophy is for the Well Disciplined Team on and off the field.

Wesley’s oldest living cricket captain who resides in Sri Lanka, Edmund Dissanayake, will be the chief guest. Dissanayake, who captained Wesley in 1946 is 86 years old and is one of four cricketers from the Hambantota district to have led the schools at cricket. The others were TI Cassim (1944), Mahendra Dissanayake (1984) and Danesh Dissanayake (1989).
